Synopsis

When Grandemont Charles, a descendant of one of the South's most aristocratic French families, discovers that Victor Fauquier, the brother of his fiancée Adele, is entangled with an octoroon, he pays for the woman to go North. An infuriated Victor disappears, and Adele, blaming Grandemont, refuses to marry him until her brother is found. Grandemont spends his entire fortune in a futile search for Victor. Years later, his only income now derived from his job as clerk, Grandemont saves six hundred dollars with which to restore the former glory of the family estate at Charleroi for one night. He rents the mansion, sends out invitations to a grand banquet and eagerly awaits his guests. His only visitor, however, is a tramp, who is made the honored guest. At dinner's end, Grandemont discovers that the tramp is none other than Victor, who had been held prisoner in Mexico. With the return of her brother, Adele agrees to marry Grandemont and a reconciliation is effected.
