Synopsis
Don Gasper Portola leaves the Spanish settlement of San Diego with a band of adventurers and discovers the Golden Gate leading to a beautiful bay. He hurries back to San Diego and tells the Royal Viceroy, who sends a group of settlers led by Juan Baptista Anza and Padre Junipero Serra, a monk, on a hazardous journey to establish a Spanish colony there. The banners of the church and of Spain are raised, and the settlement is named in honor of St. Francis. Many years later, the first Yankee arrives. After the Mexican war, California becomes a territory of the United States. The gold rush of 1849 brings thousands to the area, and within a year, California is granted statehood. In the following decade, San Francisco is beset by lawless politicians, but eventually the law-abiding citizens prevail. After the devastating earthquake and fire of 1906, the city is rebuilt, and in 1914, the Panama-Pacific Exposition opens.
