Synopsis

After oil is discovered on the family farm, Silas T. Pettingill, his wife Maria, and their daughter Helen abandon the country for Fifth Avenue, but the New York social elite fail to acknowledge their presence. One night, coming home from a drinking binge, Silas brings British cab driver Hubert Stanwood with him, and the next morning, to satisfy Maria's status-consciousness, he introduces the guest as a count. Maria is delighted with her visitor until, outranking the count, the Earl of Bradford arrives. This nobleman, however, is really Macklin Thurston, a crook hoping to steal the Pettingill fortune. The family soon discovers the masquerade and has Macklin thrown in jail, after which the Pettingills learn that Hubert is the real Earl of Bradford. Then, the former farmers themselves become a part of the royal family, as Hubert marries Helen.
