Synopsis

Widowed Italian organ grinder Tony Franti lives in a New York ghetto with his daughter Isola, a street singer, and son Andrea, a member of the Black Hand. When Tony is killed by a bomb planted by the Black Hand, Isola begins voice instructions, unaware that the lessons are financed by Charles Marden, the son of wealthy banker Nathan Marden. On the evening of her triumphant debut in Aida at the Paris Opera, Charles drunkenly tries to seduce her, telling her of her obligation to him. She flees, but later becomes a star at the Metropolitan Opera in New York. A remorseful Charles proposes to Isola and they are married, over his father's initial objections. Some time later, Andrea robs Nathan's house and kills him. Isola tends to Andrea's wounds, unaware of his involvement in Nathan's death, but when she discovers the truth, she confronts him. Because she has been away from home so much, Charles thinks that Isola has been unfaithful and believes Andrea to be her lover. She leaves Charles and takes their small son, but when Andrea dies and Charles discovers that he was Isola's brother, he quickly goes to her and begs for forgiveness.
