Synopsis
Herbert Carey, the owner of a Southern plantation, fires Joe and Jim Dudley, after which they join the Union army. Carey entrusts his wife and little daughter Virgie to his slaves Uncle Billy and Sally Ann and becomes a captain in the Confederate army. When Union soldiers under the command of Lieutenant-Colonel Morrison invade the Carey home, Jim Dudley attempts to rape Mrs. Carey. Morrison punishes him, but in revenge, Jim sets fire to the house. Morrison shoots him, thus evoking a vow of revenge from Joe. With the loss of their home, Mrs. Carey and Virgie seek shelter in the overseer's shack where the mother dies. Later, Captain Carey, disguised as a Union officer, comes to see Virgie. They try to escape to Richmond but are intercepted by Morrison who, moved by Virgie's pleas, gives them a pass. Later, Joe causes both Carey and Morrison to be arrested for treason and sentenced to death. Virgie then pleads to General Grant, who pardons them both. Morrison returns to his company and the Careys are given safe passage to Confederate lines. After the war, the Morrisons and the Careys join hands over Mrs. Carey's grave.
