Synopsis

Marusia and her lover Hyrtz are betrothed and plan to marry when Hyrtz has enough money. Their happiness is marred, however, when Khoma, a hunchback warped in mind as well as body and the richest man in the village, plans to separate the lovers and win Marusia for his own. To accomplish this, Khoma causes Hyrtz to quarrel with his best friend Potap and then induces him to insult Marusia and leave the village for good. Khoma then succeeds in placing Marusia's parents under financial obligation to him. Meanwhile, Marusia, perplexed and pining for Hyrtz, slowly succumbs to Khoma's courtship. Hyrtz returns just in time to prevent the marriage between Marusia and Khoma. When the love between Marusia and Hyrtz rekindles, Khoma arranges for the lovers to be poisoned. After his treachery is exposed, Khoma flees the vengeance of the village, but perishes in the river after Potap throws him from a cliff.
