Synopsis

Enrico Daspuro, the son of a Neopolitan blacksmith, dreams of one day singing opera at La Scala in Milan. To do so he must leave his father's business against his father's wishes. During the festival of Carnival, Enrico sings in public to great acclaim, but because he left the house without his father's permission, he is expelled from the family. While earning his living as a tourist guide, Enrico loses no chance to sing in any café that will allow it. In one of the cafés, Enrico meets Teresa, a woman connected to the world of opera. Although she has a superior attitude, she enthusiastically recommends him to the famous professor Rubini from Milan and gives him the money to journey there. The road to fame is full of pitfalls, however, and far from his sweetheart Maria and his beloved mother, Enrico often feels tormented. Once again, Teresa helps the Neopolitan singer obtain his desired objective, and after achieving professional triumphs, and with his father's pardon, Enrico happily recovers the affection of those he loves.
