Synopsis

[The following plot summary is based on the 1929 English-language version of this film, Madame X ; character names refer to that version.] Jacqueline leaves her husband for another man, and when she returns to take care of her sick son, her husband flatly rejects her. She leaves without seeing the boy; and beginning her path on the downgrade, she meets and helps a cardsharp named Laroque. When they return to France, her home, Laroque decides that because of her name he can squeeze out a goodly sum from her. At the threat of blackmail, Jacqueline, in a rage, shoots him and is subsequently defended in court by her son, who does not know her true identity. In the final court scene, Jacqueline confesses, without using names, that she shot Laroque so as not to allow her son to discover her degrading life.

Notes

This was a Spanish-language version of M-G-M's 1929 film, Madame X, which was directed by Lionel Barrymore and starred Ruth Chatterton and Lewis Stone. The onscreen Spanish credits were taken from a studio cutting continuity. Some sources include Henry Armetta, Agostino Borgato, Carlos Ramos, Otto Lang, Rosita Granada, Manuel Rea, José Fernández and Manuel Santigosa in the cast, but their participation in the released film has not been confirmed. For information on other film adaptations of Alexandre Bisson's play, please consult the entry for M-G-M's 1937 film, Madame X.
