Synopsis

Two inseparable school friends, Rafael Jiménez and Juan Montes, meet in Seville after several years. Rafael is a popular matador, while Juan has become a distinguished writer. After a successful year abroad, Rafael has returned to reclaim his reputation in front of the bullfighting fans of Seville, where Juan enjoys an excellent social standing and shortly plans to be married. Juan welcomes his childhood friend without realizing that he will soon become his fiancée Rosario's lover. When the newspapers announce that the Moors have occupied Spanish territory in North Africa, Juan feels that he should volunteer for military service. Rafael and Rosario are then left alone, but Rafael can't solve the dilemma of losing Rosario or betraying his friend, so he too goes to the front. When Juan reads a letter from Rosario, he feels that she is being faithful to him at the expense of finding happiness with Rafael. Because he wants Rosario to be happy above all else, Juan sets out on a suicide mission, then disappears and is assumed dead. Months later, Juan, a war invalid, attends the wedding of Rafael and Rosario incognito, concealing his misfortune so as not to spoil the happiness of those he loves most.
