Synopsis
Enrico Buriani, surpised by the camera in his garden in the Hollywood hills, relates the story of his lost love: A generation before, he was a great dance master at the Royal Opera House in Budapest. There he trained and fell in love with his best ballet pupil, Anna Tabor. In the middle of her debut, she fainted and fell, breaking her ankle and Buriani's heart. Not only would she never be able to dance again, but the accident also resulted in the revealation that she had secretly married a young guard officer. Heartbroken Buriani leaves Budapest at once. Six years later, in Paris, he finds María, the orphaned daughter of Anna. Buriani adopts the little girl, who grows to resemble her beautiful mother. In order to serve his everlasting love for Anna, Buriani decides to make María the great ballerina that her mother might have been. After years of wandering in Europe, they come to Hollywood, where Buriani sets up a fifth-rate dancing academy and works as an extra at the studios. María, tempted by the rhythms she hears from a dancing school across the street, and wanting to help support the household, decides to register with an agent and auditions at a low-class café, where she attracts the interest of Rodolfo Rey, a successful young motion picture director. Rey convinces the girl to work towards a career in motion pictures, but María finds it difficult to conceal her duplicity from her foster father. While working as an extra one day, Buriani discovers María taking a screen test. Furious, he locks her out of the house, but María decides to continue with Rey's plan, hoping that her foster father will eventually come to support her endeavors. When she and Rey fall in love and decide to marry, they go to tell Buriani the good news, only to discover that he has been dispossessed for non-payment of rent. María pays the rent, and begins to search for Buriani, but without success. Meanwhile, Buriani learns from his landlady that María has paid the rent and, blinded with rage, sets out for the studio to kill Rey. Entering the set, Buriani sees Maria playing the role of Anna, dancing her mother's ballet in the setting of the Royal Opera House at Budapest. The vision of María as Anna dispels Buriani's anger, and when he sees María faltering in her dance, he helps her. Overjoyed at the reunion, María dances magnificently, fulfilling Buriani's dream and vindicating Rey's judgement. From his garden today, Buriani concludes his story by revealing that María and Rey are now happily married, just as a message arrives that Maria has given birth to a baby daughter.

According to a 1937 news item in Hollywood Reporter, Victoria Films was organized by actress Rosita Moreno in order to produce this picture, and modern sources indicate that the film May have been filmed partially at that time at Grand National Studios in Hollywood, then resumed in 1939. The Variety review notes that Melville Shauer, the head of Victoria Films and husband of Rosita Moreno, was a former associate producer at Paramount. This was his only Spanish language production and cost $60,000 to produce. The title was translated as "I Believe in You."
