Synopsis

The Wall Street crash of 1929 brings tragedy to thousands, and only a small group of astute investors are able to retrieve their funds. Financial adviser Antonio Benson is one of the few to survive the disaster. He escapes from his ruined clients, whose funds he has mismanaged, by hiding out at his country home; however, someone finds him and kills him. The principal suspects are: Miss Delroy, a Broadway actress, who was robbed of her valuable pearls after she endorsed a worthless check; Adolph Mahler, the originator of the check; widow Paula Banning, who has lost a great deal of money and is pursuing Mahler, her lover, as he attempts to recover the check; gambler Harry Gray and Albert Brecher, Benson's manservant. After abandoning several false leads, the district attorney in charge of the murder investigation turns to amateur detective Philo Vance for help. Vance, while following an apparently harebrained theory, discovers the murderer.
