Synopsis

Because he performed illegal abortions during his days as an intern, hospital staff doctor Craig Cooper now finds himself being blackmailed by a one-time college friend. Aware that his hospital superior's daughter, Victoria Waterman, has long been sexually attracted to him, Cooper tells the neurotic young woman that he needs $50,000 for taxes and then seduces her. The following morning, Cooper is summoned to the Waterman residence and informed that the doctor died during his sleep. When Victoria, while painting furiously at her easel, admits that she administered an undetectable poison to her father in order to hasten the receipt of her inheritence, Cooper suppresses an impulse to notify the police and reports the cause of death as a stroke. In the meantime, Cooper's mistress Cheryl has secretly tried to help by arranging a rendezvous with the blackmailer; but although she submits to the blackmailer's brutal lovemaking, she fails to dissuade him from pressuring Cooper. At the reading of Dr. Waterman's will, Victoria is stunned to learn that she has inherited only a small monthly allowance; the bulk of the estate has gone to her sister Gail. Driven to a psychotic rage, Victoria attacks her sister in the bathroom, murders her with a brass candelabra, and then feverishly resumes painting at her easel. Upon discovering the body, Cooper carries it to his car, conceals it in the back seat, and returns to Victoria. A few moments later, however, the couple are horrified to see Gail's blood-spattered body standing in the doorway. Then the figure slumps to the floor and the blackmailer, smiling demonically at Cooper, steps out of the shadows. As Cooper turns away, he catches a glimpse of the canvas Victoria has been painting. It is a portrait of himself cradled in the arms of death.
