Synopsis
Caesar, bored with the women of his country, is informed by his eunuch Cicero of the beautiful, dark princess of the Nile, Cleopatra. Caesar dispatches his trusted general Mark Antony to bring her to Rome, warning him that she is not to be molested in transit. Antony, with his two lieutenants Enobarbus and Demetrius, departs for Egypt. Despite Caesar's warning, Antony and Cleopatra become lovers. The evening of Antony's arrival, Cleopatra and her lady-in-waiting, Charmian, initiate the three Romans into their cult of love during the sacrifice of a virgin. An orgy follows as the assembled crowd pays homage with their bodies to the god of love. In the morning, a messenger arrives from Caesar bringing news that there is war in the capital and that Mark Antony is to return at once. Cleopatra, abandoned by Antony, finds solace in Charmian's kisses. Cleopatra then decides that she will follow Antony to Rome and destroy Caesar. She arrives in Rome and proceeds to seduce Caesar, only to be seen by Enobarbus. Antony, upon hearing this news, orders that Cleopatra be thrown into the dungeon. Charmian, disguised as a love goddess, seduces the guards and frees Cleopatra. They flee to Egypt. The Roman senators in the meantime plot the overthrow of Caesar and stab him to death on the steps of the senate. The senators then make Antony the scapegoat for their crime, forcing him to flee to Egypt. Despite Cleopatra's navy, Antony is defeated at sea. Enobarbus and Demetrius, forseeing Antony's imminent defeat, switch their allegiance and proceed to loot Cleopatra's palace. Enobarbus finds Cleopatra and rapes her. Antony discovers them and murders both of them in a jealous rage. As two Roman centurians appear to take him to trial for murder and treason, he commits suicide with his dagger out of grief for Cleopatra.
