Synopsis

Detective Bill Barlen investigates his own nephew Arthur, who is missing and is suspected of the sex slaying of Mary Thorne. Barlen interviews several of Arthur's acquaintances: Midge, Edie, and Bobby, three women who claim that Arthur raped them; and Dr. Meade, who performed an appendectomy on Arthur. Meanwhile, Arthur, after setting up his next victim, a prostitute, inexplicably does not harm her. Barlen returns to Meade for further questioning, and Meade tells of Arthur's recent past, revealing that Arthur, envious of the sexual prowess of his friend Felix, blackmailed Meade, an abortionist, into transplanting onto Arthur his friend's sex organ when he knew that Felix was dying of an incurable disease. Arthur is brought to trial when he confesses that he did not mean to kill Mary Thorne; he actually loved her, but that the sight of her gold earrings threw him (as it did Felix) into a fit of violent and uncontrollable lust. Barlen surmises that Felix's acknowledged obsession for gold earrings came with the organ transplant, and that Arthur did not harm the prostitute because she was not wearing gold earrings.
