Synopsis
In Italy, early in the 17th century, Spanish soldiers attempt to plunder the property of nobleman Gian Paolo Osio. Osio kills the Spanish leader and seeks refuge with Father Arrigone, who arranges with his secret mistress, Virginia de Leyva, prioress of the Convent of Santa Margherita at Monza, for Osio's protection. Osio is immediately attracted to the prioress and attempts to rape her. Though resisting at first, Virginia yields to her repressed emotions and joins him in passionate lovemaking; then, stricken with feelings of guilt, she has Osio arrested. Later, after bearing his child, she arranges for his escape and the resumption of their affair. Once more she suspends the relationship, and Osio goes away; but upon his return, they again indulge their passion. Arrigone's jealousy is aroused, and church authorities begin to investigate the murder of a nun who had witnessed the illicit lovemaking. Osio escapes, but Virginia is tried by an ecclesiastical court in Milan. Found guilty of having had sexual relations and of being an accomplice in murder, she is sentenced to be walled up in a prison cell for life.
