Synopsis

Mauritz, an intellectual turned hack writer, arrives at a Gotland resort for a few weeks of work and vacation. While working on his current commission, a housewives' guide to astrology, he has several affairs, first with the hotel chambermaid, Barbro, then with a vacationing actress, Eliza; and he spends much of his time partying with a group of unrestrained artists and aspiring actors. Eliza confesses that she loves him, but Mauritz is unable to commit himself. After a moonlight beach party in which one of his group, a Japanese painter, burns his paintings, Mauritz bids Eliza good-bye at the airport and returns to his noncommittal existence.
