I Am Curious (Blue)

1h 47m 1970

Brief Synopsis

The same movie with the same characters, cast and crew as I am Curious (Yellow), but with some different scenes and a different political slant. The political focus in Blue is personal relationships, religion, prisons and sex. Blue omits much of the class consciousness and non-violence interviews of the first version. Yellow and Blue are the colors of the Swedish flag.

Synopsis

Vilgot Sjöman tests actresses for the role of Madeline in a future film. In a documentary insert, actress Lena visits a sex education course in which teenaged girls conclude that sexual enjoyment is improper for females. Back at Sjöman's studio, Börje Ahlstedt is given the part of the car salesman, but he is unable to decide if he wants it. Meanwhile, Lena converts her bedroom into a meeting place to study Sweden's political and sexual attitudes. With two friends, she conducts interviews with people on the streets of Stockholm and meets her former lover, Hans. They try to renew their relationship aboard his flagship, but he is impotent with anyone but his mistress, Bim. Sjöman enters and complains that Hans is overacting in the scene. After having sex with Börje, Lena sets out to find her mother; on the way, she preaches against the hypocrisy of religion and calls for prison reform. While interviewing teenagers at a school dance, Lena meets Sonja, a singer who has a 13-year-old illegitimate daughter. Sonja takes Lena nude swimming and camping at Strömsund Lake, but when Lena sees two lesbians having sex, she hurries back to Stockholm and stays with Hans and Bim. She overhears Hans sadistically beating Bim, and, disillusioned with the man who taught her political nonviolence, leaves the flagship. Börje and Lena learn that they have venereal disease and seek treatment at a health clinic. Sjöman interrupts the scene to explain that there is camera trouble and then announces that it is time for Lena's reunion with her mother; mother and daughter embrace.
