Synopsis

Yoshimoto "Subu" Ogata, a salesman of medical instruments, also deals in pornographic material of every variety and supplies young girls to businessmen. He has no qualms about his business, asserting that he is bringing pleasure to those in need of sexual satisfaction. His personal life, however, is deeply troubled. He lives with a widow, Haru Masuda, who keeps a carp that she insists is a reincarnation of her husband, and her two teenaged children: a son, Koichi, who is interested in Ogata only for his money, and a daughter, Keiko, who does not resist Ogata's tentative advances toward her. Haru, disturbed by the relationship between Ogata and her daughter, suggests that they get married. After Koichi steals his mother's money and runs off with a prostitute, Haru goes mad, is hospitalized, and dies. While Keiko is holding orgies in the house, Ogata goes through a period of grief and debauchery, finally moving to a houseboat with his assistant, Kabo. There, Ogata fashions a full-size doll in the likeness of Haru, believing that such an invention will make men independent of women. Several years later, Ogata has gone slightly mad and refuses to sell his invention, believing it to be a reincarnation of Haru. The boat slips from its moorings and drifts out to sea, with Ogata aboard singing happily.
