Synopsis

Masaba, former stick fighting champion of a South African Bantu tribe, is defeated at the annual contest. He goes to the witch doctor for advice on how to win back his title and is told that he must drink a potion containing the heart of a young twin girl. Soon afterwards, one of Ntuku Makwena's twin daughters disappears, and he visits the witch doctor, who informs him that the girl was killed by Masaba. The witch doctor then places a curse on Ntuku. When Ntuku's wife goes to the top of the mountain to try to remove the curse, she slips and falls to her death. In accordance with the tribal laws of revenge, Ntuku follows Masaba to Johannesburg and tries to kill him. Arrested and awaiting trial, Ntuku learns that his defense has been assigned to Tom Davis, a member of the Legal Aid Society. Davis is annoyed at having to spend time on the case, and Ntuku refuses to help in his own defense. Disgusted by her husband's obsession with his career, Davis' wife, Marion, takes an interest in the case. Ntuku receives a mild sentence of 2 years at hard labor, but he escapes and returns to his village. There he discovers that the real murderer is the witch doctor, and he kills him, despite the belief that he will be destroyed by the gods for slaying the sacred figure. When Ntuku is not struck down, the entire village is liberated from the superstitions of the witch doctor cult, and Ntuku returns to Johannesburg with Tom and Marion Davis, hoping to find justice.
