Synopsis
Charter boat captain James of Key West, Florida, is persuaded to help smuggle Cuban refugees seeking asylum in the United States. Among the refugees are Linda Dennison and her husband, Lyle. Drifting near the Cuban shoreline as it waits for the refugees to arrive, James's vessel is spotted by Cuban gunners. The refugees successfully board the boat, but Pete Sands, the captain's drunken crewman, is fatally wounded by a patrol boat. The U. S. authorities, alerted to James's illegal operation, impound his boat and revoke his license. Returning to Key West, James becomes attracted to Linda, enraging her jealous, psychotic husband. Lyle learns that James plans to take a cruise on his sloop while awaiting the return of his charter fishing license, and he agrees to give Linda a divorce if James will take him to Bermuda. James agrees, after some persuasion from Linda, but once at sea Lyle knocks James overboard. Lyle, however, cannot operate the boat; and James, after hovering for hours in the water nearby, boards the craft. A fight ensues; Lyle is killed; and James is picked up by a helicopter rescue unit of the U. S. Coast Guard. James returns to Linda in Key West.
