Synopsis
Paulette Moore arrives in New York City from Ohio in the hopes of becoming an actress and finds a room in Tracy Kane's apartment. Tracy advises Paulette to attend a party where she will meet theatrical agent Sam Biller. Paulette discovers an orgy in progress and, breaking away from Sam she leaves. Tracy refuses to return her rent money, and Paulette begins a frantic round of job hunting. Meanwhile, she meets Allen Martin and they begin to date. Gradually, Paulette realizes that Tracy is a prostitute, and by accident she walks into the apartment while Tracy and Sam are making love. Desperate, Paulette takes a job as a waitress but is soon fired for inefficiency. Now penniless, Paulette embarks on a life of prostitution in spite of her love for Allen. One day after Paulette has been brutally beaten by a client, she meets Allen in a park. He forces the truth from her but still wishes to marry her. Paulette refuses, believing that she would not be a worthy wife.
