Synopsis

On the way to Mount Fuji to celebrate Japanese New Year, Zatoichi, the blind master swordsman, is attacked by five bandits who prove to be no match for his skill. Continuing his journey by ship, Zatoichi wins a large sum of money from amateur gamblers who are part of a gang led by Enoshimeya; he also meets Jumonji, an excellent chess player and swordsman who leaves the ship with him at the island dock. There Enoshimeya lures Zatoichi into a trap, but the latter wins the ensuing battle, although a little girl is wounded in the process. To appease his guilt, Zatoichi gambles for money to buy medicine for her but loses; Jumonji comes to the rescue, however, and provides the money. Otane, the girl's mother and widow of a man whom Zatoichi had killed in self-defense, has been sent by the bandits to spy on Zatoichi, but she falls in love with him instead. Meanwhile, Zatoichi is disturbed to learn that Jumonji enjoys killing; when a young samurai and his sister come looking for the man who wantonly killed their father, Zatoichi realizes that Jumonji is the murderer. Sensing a showdown, Jumonji decides to kill his friend, but the brother and sister slay him and avenge their father's death.
