Synopsis

The story takes place at the wedding of Hildur Palm and Hilmer Westlund, a wealthy butcher old enough to be her father. Hildur is already pregnant by Martin, a farmhand on her father's farm; she is in love with Martin, but he has refused to marry her. At the dinner following the wedding, the villagers become drunk and reveal their secret love affairs, and Martin commits suicide by hanging himself from a tree in the yard. Hilmer takes his bride home after the party, but since he is too drunk to make love, his best friend goes to bed with Hildur.
