Synopsis

A man named Marlow poses as a chauffeur, kidnaps Jonathan, the young son of a millionaire, Chester, and takes him to a house in a remote section of London. After giving Jonathan a golliwog to keep him company, Marlow goes to Chester's house to demand a ransom of £50,000. He tells Chester that the golliwog contains a time bomb set to go off at 10 o'clock the next morning. He also says that he will depart for South America in the evening and will cable Chester the boy's whereabouts before the bomb is to explode. Chester makes plans to withdraw the ransom money, but Robbie, the boy's governess, informs the police, and Inspector Parnell arrives at the Chester house before Marlow has left. Parnell refuses to allow Chester to pay the ransom; a fight breaks out; and Chester accidentally kills Marlow before Parnell can find out from Marlow where the boy is. A rental agent recognizes a newspaper photograph of Marlow and leads the police to the house he rented to the kidnaper. Police arrive a few minutes after 10 a.m. and find Jonathan quietly playing with the golliwog: by immersing the toy in water, the boy inactivated the bomb.
