Synopsis

Three Air Force pilots, Lieutenants York, Lyons, and Witkowski, are assigned to Major Stevens' F-104 Starfighter training program. Witkowski's father, a famed World War II bomber pilot and now a prominent congressman, expresses his displeasure with his son's assignment to the Tactical Air Command and attempts to have him transferred to a B-58 bomber squadron. Nevertheless, Witkowski continues to train with the other men and becomes an expert pilot; meanwhile, he meets Mary Davidson, and a romance develops between them. The three trainees are sent by Major Stevens on a cross-country mission during a storm, and they are forced to separate. Lyons' plane is downed in the mountains, and Witkowski is feared lost; but it is later learned that Lyons has made a successful parachute landing, and Witkowski has brought his plane to safety at an alternate base. Witkowski, who has won his father's admiration, bids a temporary good-by to Mary and leaves for Europe with the rest of the squadron.
