Synopsis

Beautiful Nastenka is forced to work as a scullery maid by her mean-tempered stepmother, who tyrannizes Nastenka's weak-willed father and dotes on her own ugly daughter, Marfushka. Nastenka falls in love with Ivan, a handsome, conceited young man who has set out to make his fortune in the world. To teach Ivan a lesson, Father Mushroom endows him with the head of a bear and warns him that he will remain in this condition until he accomplishes a good deed. Nastenka's stepmother persuades the girl's father to abandon her in the forest, but kindly Jack Frost finds her and carries her back to his castle. Ivan, searching for his lost love, forces an old witch to help him. As he makes his way to Jack Frost's castle, the evil witch sends her cat to destroy Nastenka. The girl is tricked into touching Jack Frost's magic scepter, and she falls into a frozen, death-like trance. Ivan finds her apparently lifeless body and begins to weep. One of his tears falls onto Nastenka's cheek, causing her to awaken from her sleep; and Ivan regains his own handsome head. As they prepare for a lavish wedding, Nastenka's stepsister is sent into the forest in the hope that she will likewise find a handsome stranger, but she returns alone in a sled pulled by three fat pigs. Nastenka's father regains his courage and assumes control of the household.
