Synopsis
Volodya, a construction engineer with an interest in writing, stops in Moscow for 24 hours en route back to his job in the Kamchatka region of Siberia. He makes friends with Kolka, a subway worker, and Kolka's friend Sasha. After a night on the job, Kolka accompanies Sasha to the military induction office so that Sasha can obtain a last-minute postponement of his induction in order to be married. Kolka then sets out with Volodya to meet Voronin, a well-known writer who has written Volodya a letter complimenting his newly-published story. Later, Kolka and Volodya both become attracted to Alena, a salesgirl in the record section of a department store, and they become rivals. In Gorky Park, Kolka and Volodya pursue a pickpocket, and at the police station Volodya is accused of being the criminal. However, Alena's resourcefulness is responsible for the capture of the true culprit. The three friends go to Sasha's home for his wedding party but find him in despair, having quarreled with his new bride. She has returned to her mother's home, but Kolka arranges a reconciliation. Finally, Volodya leaves to begin his journey homeward, and Kolka and Alena accompany him to the subway.
