Kamikaze

1h 41m 1962

Brief Synopsis

Lt. Col. Senda resists the idea of sending Japanese fighter pilots on suicide missions. He believes that what is really necessary for Japan to regain momentum in the war is for the air force to gather its most brilliant pilots into an elite squadron and use the unit to pinpoint attacks on the Americans. Disrespected by the kamikaze pilots who think the "non-suicidal" pilots are afraid, the unit redeems itself by stunning victories. But success leads the military leaders to expect too much of the unit, and new orders portend disaster.

Synopsis

Allied and Japanese newsreel footage is used to introduce evidence that in 1941 the United States received repeated warnings that the Japanese were planning aggressive action. Following the attack on Pearl Harbor, war is declared, and Japan makes steady gains during the next 6 months. When the Americans retake bases on the Gilbert, Marshall, and Mariana Islands, however, the tide begins to turn. In a desperate attempt to regain their losses, the Japanese resort to the use of Kamikaze pilots, but the United States retaliates with the atom bomb, and Japan is forced into an unconditional surrender.
