Synopsis

Five seamen and a passenger spend 14 hours in London as their cargo passenger boat unloads. At a West End bar, passenger George Hudson, a lonely, widowed businessman, meets Wanda, a seductive blackmailer working with a photographer partner, Paul. Before returning to ship, Hudson successfully foils their blackmail plot. Lee, an Australian with a love for music and travel, meets the zany beatnik Penny, and they fall in love. Arthur, a loner, goes off to visit his "mother," as he does in every port, but the others realize that he will spend the time with his standby prostitute. Paddy spends his leave in a drinking bout. Harry, a tough know-it-all, shakes off Margaret, a brash tart, and visits a Soho clip joint where he is robbed by Marlene and Arlene and thrown out, penniless. Jamie, shy and innocent, meets Jean, who is homeless, and falls in love while helping to find her a place to live. The next morning he jumps ship, marries her, and settles down as an electrician.
