Synopsis

Spaceship Icarus , a flying city of the 25th century, speeds its crew of 50 men and women toward distant planets. After 4 months of travel, astronomer Hopkins pinpoints a mysterious spacecraft in the path of Icarus . Pilots of an expeditionary rocket find that the craft is a wreck peopled by the dead; evidence of poison gas indicates foul play. The expedition commander discovers that the craft is charged with atomic energy and calls the pilots back. The pilots find unexploded bombs on the craft and attempt to return, but their rocket explodes in an enormous atomic blast. Resuming its course, Icarus approaches a dark star whose radiation retards the biochemical processes of living organisms and induces a deep sleep. According to Hopkins' calculations, the ship must run on automatic pilot for 60 hours to pass the danger zone, but the crew mysteriously awakens after 25 hours. The scientists must now devote their attentions to Svensson and Michael, who have been poisoned by radiation while repairing Icarus . Michael has lost his ability to reason and wants only to return home; he locks himself behind armored doors, and MacDonald crawls through air ducts to subdue him. The crisis past, Brigit discovers a strange nebula moving at the same speed as the ship. Hopkins determines that the cloud is a magnetic field beamed from the Green Planet to protect them from the dark star's radiation; this phenonemon accounts for their premature awakening. Convinced that they have at last found a planet inhabited by intelligent and friendly creatures, the crew prepares to land on the Green Planet--Earth.
