Synopsis

Solicitor Alan Phipps formulates a plan to blackmail his wealthy wife, Yvonne, and at the same time gain revenge against her former lover, John Brodie. Phipps instructs Brodie to demand payment from Yvonne in return for his silence about the affair, and he and Brodie will split the money. Phipps then supplies his wife with a gun, which he assures Brodie contains blanks but which actually is loaded with live ammunition. Brodie, acting his part, is shot dead, and Yvonne is arrested for the crime. Unknown to Phipps, however, Brodie had an accomplice, Peter Dexter, who now begins to blackmail both Phipps and his wife. Driven to desperation, Phipps is about to kill Dexter when the police arrive and arrest them both.
