Synopsis
Hapless butcher's assistant Norman Pitkin visits the hospital where his employer, Mr. Grimsdale, is being treated after swallowing his gold watch and chain. After twice humiliating Lady Brinkley, the hospital's rich patron, Norman is chased through the institution by Sir Hector Hardcastle, the pompous hospital director. Taking refuge in a children's ward, Norman brings a smile to the face of Lindy, a girl who, having lost both her parents in a plane crash, has been in shock until now. He promises nurse Janet that he will see Lindy again, but Sir Hector bans him from the building. Attempting to return as a patient, he tries not only to catch pneumonia but also to make himself the victim of a hit-and-run accident; but once he returns to the hospital, he disguises himself as a nurse to avoid an operation planned for him. Subsequently, he and Grimsdale, dressed in ambulance uniforms, purposely become entangled in a televised charity ball. Although Lindy is watching the ball on television, she is sent back to bed before Norman appears on the screen. Janet soon discovers Lindy's empty bed and follows her to the ball, where Norman is making an emotional appeal to the guests to contribute money and valuables for a children's seaside home. Sir Hector apologizes to Norman and Grimsdale, who mistake the director's purpose and run out of the hotel into the path of an automobile. Now recovered, Lindy visits the two men in the hospital as they recuperate from their injuries.
