Synopsis
While driving to visit his child at a boarding school in Pisa, Antonio Berlinghieri, a successful 39-year-old electrical engineer, is nearly forced off the road by two cars driven by reckless teenagers. Later, he comes across the two cars, which have run out of gas, and he is waved to a stop by Francesca, a 16-year-old. Francesca flirts with Antonio while the other teenagers siphon out his gas. The teenagers drive away, and shortly thereafter Antonio runs out of gas and has to push his car to a service station. He sees the same group coming out of the station's bar. One of the boys cons Antonio into paying the bill and driving him to the beach cottage where the group is vacationing. Antonio becomes infatuated with Francesca, who encourages his attentions simply to amuse her friends. Meanwhile, he becomes involved in a number of foolish and embarrassing situations in his attempt to prove himself the equal of the younger men in the group. Finally, he fights with Francesca's boyfriend. He receives a sound beating but wins the fight with a lucky blow; and the group declares him their new leader. After a torchlight celebration on the beach, Antonio and Francesca fall asleep in each other's arms. The following morning, however, Antonio awakens alone, surrounded by extinguished torches. Antonio's illusion of recaptured youth disappears with the teenagers.
