Synopsis

Christy Mahon stumbles into a remote tavern on the Irish coast of County Mayo and announces that he has murdered his tyrannical father by splitting his head with a single blow from a spade. The villagers are impressed, and Christy becomes a hero to the town's young women, including Pegeen Mike, the innkeeper's daughter, who has listened to his tale in awe. Pegeen competes for his love with the amorous Widow Quin. As Christy reaches the height of his popularity, his father, Old Mahon, unexpectedly arrives, alive but with a bandaged head. When the villagers discover that Christy is not really a murderer, he is ridiculed, and Pegeen breaks with him. To regain his former status, he once again strikes his father and this time is apparently successful in killing him. The villagers, now faced with the actuality of the murder, are incensed, and they make plans to hang young Christy; but once more the old man recovers, and he rescues his son. Bowing to Christy's superior strength, the old man asks him to return home, and the two men depart together, leaving Pegeen to grieve over her loss.
