Synopsis

New York detective Joe Como arrives in Germany to learn that fellow agent Nick Prado has been found dead in a car trunk. Continuing his ex-colleague's investigation of a phantom who is allegedly stalking the Metropol Theater, Joe questions dancer Liane Martin, who fears she is being followed by an invisible man. In a hotel room adjacent to Liane's, Joe meets Professor Erasmus, inventor of "Operation X," a secret process which renders persons and objects invisible. The professor, disfigured in an automobile accident, tells Joe that he makes himself invisible so as not to frighten his beloved Liane. Archcriminal Dr. Mabuse kidnaps Liane and demands as ransom "Operation X," which will allow him to terrorize the world. Forced to give Mabuse his secret formula, Erasmus then sacrifices his life to save Joe. Joe captures Mabuse's invisible thugs and, accompanied by the police, storms the professor's laboratory. They find Mabuse, disguised as Erasmus' assistant, Bardorf; he is insanely enraged after accidentally setting the laboratory on fire. Joe delivers Mabuse to an insane asylum and departs for America with Liane.
