Synopsis

Yianni, a young Greek sailor, jumps ship in New York City in order to pursue a compatriot, Pano Coupas, whom he intends to kill. Yianni meets Niki Vassos, a Greek-American, and she invites him to stay with her family at their Washington Heights home. Mrs. Vassos, a Greek immigrant, distrusts the stranger, and she finds his gun. Confronted by Niki, Yianni reveals that, years before, Coupas visited his village in Greece and disgraced his sister, proposing marriage and then seducing her. Yianni's sister killed herself in shame, and the custom of the mountain village dictated revenge. Niki tries to persuade Yianni to leave behind Old World customs and begin a new life in America, and he wavers. Later at a party to celebrate the baptism of a child, Yianni is persuaded to perform a Greek sword dance, and his emotions are aroused. He seeks out Coupas and shoots him; then he flees to his ship, pursued by police. Niki tries to persuade Yianni to give himself up, but in the struggle, his gun goes off and kills him.
