Synopsis

A passenger airplane bound for Venezuela waits to depart from the Mexico City airport. Among the passengers are: chorus girl Martine Duval; wealthy, middle-aged industrialist Bert Frank and his young bride, Ellen; Father Sawena, a missionary to Venezuela; Mario Bertelli, a convicted murderer being extradited to Venezuela; successful lawyer Henry Boone; newspaper reporter Michael Damon; bullfighter José Antonio Garcia; and archeologist Neils Larson. En route, a heavy storm forces the aircraft to make an emergency landing on a deserted island in the Caribbean. Father Sawena attempts to calm the survivors while Bertelli, whose police guard was killed in the crash, terrorizes them all with the policeman's gun. Bertelli strikes up a relationship with Martine, the only passenger who does not resent him. Garcia reveals that he has information that Boone, the lawyer, had committed perjury, and the latter, finding his career threatened, kills the bullfighter, intending to place the blame on Bertelli. Ellen learns that her husband, who dies from injuries he received in the crash, was involved in a financial swindle. Bertelli tries to rape Ellen, but Father Sawena intervenes. Bertelli fires at him but the bullet wounds Martine instead. Bertelli is overpowered and tied up by the men. When radio contact is made with Mexico, Boone frees Bertelli, and together they plan to kill the other survivors, although Bertelli does not intend to keep the bargain. The helicopter arrives; Boone is revealed to be Garcia's murderer; Bertelli is shot while trying to commandeer the helicopter; and the remaining survivors return to civilization.
