Synopsis

A good-hearted soldier happily returns homeward after many years of military service. He walks through the birch forest, meeting animal friends as he goes, and rescues a bear from a trap. The soldier meets a little boy, Ivanushka, whose mother, Maria, a weaver of marvelous skill, has been kidnaped by the czar of the water. The czar has placed Maria under lock and key and forces her to weave day and night. The soldier and Ivanushka enter the underwater kingdom; and at last, with the help of the czar's granddaughter, Alenushka, they outwit the czar and rescue Maria.
