Synopsis

Shipwrecked in the South Seas, Stanton is cast up on a mysterious island inhabited only by beautiful native women. At a feast given in his honor, he consumes too much liquor. Taken prisoner, he learns of the island's first contact with white men: long ago, pirates invaded, ravaging the women and destroying the underwater temple of the sea god. He learns that the beautiful women he sees have been sent from surrounding islands to care for Princess Nani Maka, who has been chosen to join in a sacrificial marriage to the sea god. The princess saves Stanton's life when he is left to die in the sun, and he in turn saves the islanders from enemy tribesmen. He is given his freedom but is forbidden to woo Nani Maka. Nevertheless, Stanton and the princess are irresistibly drawn to each other. On the day appointed for the sacrificial ceremony, Stanton joins Nani Maka on her journey beneath the water, and leads her to a dry cave. There they discover the ruins of the temple of the sea god and three chests of pirate treasure. They perform a marriage ceremony and stay the night. As they emerge from the cave entrance the next morning to return to Stanton's homeland, Nani Maka is caught in the jaws of a giant clam. Unable to save her, Stanton carries her body to his raft and sets out in anguish from the island. He drifts upon the seas until he is fished up by a schooner to tell his unhappy tale.
