Synopsis

In 1942 during the German occupation of Czechoslovakia, Hanka, a Jewish schoolgirl in Prague, escapes when her family is shipped away to the ghetto. Pavel, a university student, comes to her aid by hiding her in an attic storeroom. While Pavel struggles to keep Hanka safe, a romance blossoms between them. In addition to the danger of Hanka's discovery by the Nazis, which is heightened after the assassination of SS Gen. Reinhard Heydrich and the consequent reprisals, Pavel faces increasing pressure from his possessive mother, who has grown suspicious about the disappearance of food and his increased absence from home. Pavel searches in vain for a new hiding place. Finally, a collaborator neighbor discovers Hanka, and the tenants argue about what should be done with her. As an SS division approaches the building, Hanka is faced with the dilemma of endangering lives of others, and she decides to leave the house. Pavel tries in vain to stop her, but Hanka rushes into the street and is shot by the SS patrol.
