Synopsis

A fisherman of the northern islands, too old to ply his trade, becomes a night watchman and net mender at a local fishery. Alone with his cats, the man remembers his dead wife and three sons. He recalls his eldest son drowning while playing on the ice floes; his second son's death while a soldier in China; his third boy's service during World War II and subsequent departure for Tokyo; his wife's death from pneumonia; his son's return from Tokyo, career as a fisherman, and recent death during a typhoon. When the son's fiancée arrives for a visit to her beloved's island, the fisherman escorts her about the island without revealing his identity. The man later drowns while attempting to save one of his beloved pets.
