Synopsis

Mountain men Buck and Babe Gaskin, who make their living as moonshiners, are rivals with the Gruber boys, who also make moonshine. Buck and Babe try their best to keep the still hidden from Sarah Good and Hannah Hover, members of the local temperance group, the WCTU. After Babe has an accident and gets drunk on his own moonshine, which he calls "cough syrup," he inadvertently tells Hannah the location of the still. She then tells Sheriff Wayne Lawson, who is in love with Babe and Buck's sister Leatha. During a raid, Lawson and his men come upon the Grubers' still and destroy it, thinking it belongs to the Gaskins. Later, Leatha confronts Buck, telling him that she plans to marry Lawson and wants her brothers to destroy their own still. Although Buck initially refuses, he has a change of heart after Leatha angrily leaves, and blows up the still.
