Synopsis
For buying two bars of chocolate on the black market during the last days of World War II, Pvt. Rudi Kleinschmidt is given the death penalty by Wilhelm Schramm, a fanatical Nazi prosecutor, but an Allied air raid enables Rudi to escape before the sentence can be carried out. Years later, Rudi, now a street vendor, arrives in the small German town where a former girl friend, Lissy, owns the local inn. Though Lissy is still fond of Rudi, she cannot understand his easy-going nature and encourages him to be more aggressive. Also living in the town is Schramm, who has managed to obscure his past and has become a public prosecutor. Despite the fact that Rudi does not hold a grudge against Schramm, the prosecutor fears that his background will be discovered, and he uses his influence to have Rudi put out of town. When Rudi is unable to win the support of the local citizens, he smashes a store window and steals some chocolate in order to be brought to trial. Schramm again prosecutes, but his mounting fear leads him into hysterically demanding the death penalty and exposing his past. He flees in panic from the court, and Rudi is set free.
