Synopsis
In Spain in 1503 the impoverished and widowed mother of young Lazarillo de Tormes gives her son to a traveling blind beggar in the hope that he will take care of the child. The beggar proves to be a harsh taskmaster, however, and Lazarillo flees from him. He then aligns himself with a priest who dispenses food for the boy's soul but none for his body, and Lazarillo once more searches for a new master. Next he encounters a squire, who turns out to be just as hungry as Lazarillo. Running off again, the boy meets a troupe of theatrical players and is befriended by the chief actor, a wily character who supplements his earnings by posing as a friar and selling papal indulgences. Lazarillo becomes an accomplice, and, although sometimes troubled by his conscience, he decides that he will join the troupe and at least insure himself of a full stomach.
