Synopsis
Norman Truscott, a timid suit-presser, dreams of someday becoming a popular singing star. He is so insecure, however, that he can only sing when his crippled girl friend, Judy, is on hand to play the piano for him and give him confidence. One day, fading music star Vernon Carew accidentally hears Norman sing and realizes that he has the type of voice the public wants. Carew persuades the gullible Norman, accompanied by Judy, to audition for him and secretly records the song. His agent sells the tape to a recording company as Carew's own voice, and it becomes a tremendous hit. When the record company demands another disc, Carew once more gets Norman to sing. This time, however, Judy is not there, and Norman can only croak. Carew solves the problem by forcing Norman to take a bath, on the theory that everyone sings in the bathtub. A hidden microphone records Norman singing, and Carew has another hit record. Eventually Norman's voice coach, Dymphna Dobson, recognizes the voice of Carew's recordings as that of her pupil, and she decides to expose the fraud. While Carew is on stage at the London Palladium miming a recording of Norman's voice, she smashes the disc and brings Norman on stage. Realizing that it was his voice that made Carew famous, Norman completely captivates the audience and later finds the courage to propose to Judy.
