Synopsis

During the German retreat from Stalingrad in World War II, military discipline is rigorously enforced. Accordingly, the deserter Fedor is sentenced to death. Assigned to prepare the prisoner for his execution, the chaplain familiarizes himself with Fedor's history. In so doing he discovers that the deserter's motivation was to protect a Russian widow from outrage by either army. Despite the prisoner's purity of purpose, he is executed in the morning.
