Synopsis

While traveling in a sleigh during a snowstorm, a Scandinavian husband and wife are attacked and killed by wolves. Their baby girl is thrown clear and rescued by a Lapland chieftain, Aslak, and his wife, Elli. Childless for many years, the couple decide to raise the infant as their own. They name her Lila, and she is brought up according to traditional Laplander customs. Consequently, when Lila reaches maturity, she accepts the decision that she will marry the man of her father's choice, a young Laplander named Mellet. Although Mellet is humiliated when Lila beats him in the annual reindeer race, he still insists that she become his bride. Then one day she meets and falls in love with Anders, a Norwegian merchant who offers to take her away and show her the modern world. Aslak strongly objects, so Lila arranges a farewell meeting with Anders. When the jealous Mellet learns of the rendezvous, he attacks Anders and leaves him to die in a ravine. Anders recovers, however, and races on skis to Lila's wedding. Upon his arrival, Aslak finally reveals Lila's true origin, thereby freeing her to marry Anders.
