Synopsis

In the 19th century, Professor Roche, a scientist working on a powerful explosive, and his young assistant Simon Hart are kidnaped by pirates and taken to a volcanic island in a remote part of the Atlantic. The unsuspecting professor believes that he was captured to prevent his invention from falling into evil hands and that he is now free to work in a laboratory inside the volcano. Though Hart learns that the pirate chief, Artigas, plans to use the explosive to conquer the world, he is unable to warn the professor, who is imprisoned in an isolated hut. Aided by Jana, another captive, Hart succeeds in launching a balloon with a message to the outside world. Eventually he escapes, is picked up by a French submarine, and returns to the island in a final attempt to warn the professor. Roche has discovered the duplicity himself, however, and sets off the explosive, destroying himself, the island, and the pirates; Hart and Jana escape in a giant balloon.
