Synopsis
Troubles begin for Sally Fitzgerald when her lovable but irresponsible father takes her meager savings and invests them in a pub near the Clydebank, Scotland shipyards. Sally soon discovers that he has been bilked, but decides to make the best of it. Disaster strikes, however, when the shipbuilding industry closes down and throws the entire community out of work. Sally suggets that the men march to London and demand a resumption of employment, but they protest that they would starve along the way. As an alternative, it is decided that Sally will present a petition signed by all to Lord Randell, head of the shipbuilding commission. Dressed as a man, Sally tries to see Randell at the exclusive Argyle Club, but must retreat when her suit, which is actually a magician's costume, splits apart. Unable to secure an audience with his lordship at his office, Sally and her father go to his home, but upon being turned away at the door, they are met by an American torch singer who mistakes them for members of the Randell family. The singer informs them that she is unable to perform at their party that night because of laryngitis. Sally decides to take advantage of the situation by impersonating the singer to gain entry to the party, and after a series of mishaps, she is able to talk to Lord Randell and convince him to reopen the shipyards. Her task accomplished, Sally returns home to be hailed as a heroine.

The working title of this picture was Sally Goes to Town. The opening and closing of the film features newsreel footage of the launch of the Queen Mary. This was the last film that actress Gracie Field and director Monty Banks made in England before coming to the United States. They married in 1940.
