Synopsis

When cattle rancher Billy Hays returns from an extended roundup, Leatherneck, one of his ranch hands, gives him a letter from Billy's sister in which she states that, as he has become an old grouch and woman hater, she is sending several of her cultured, Eastern friends to stay with him for a few weeks. Leatherneck then tells Billy that the group arrived by car while he was gone and has already moved into the ranch house. The leader of the group is Billy's cousin, pompous millionaire Frank La Rue, whom Billy has not seen since childhood. La Rue's fiancée, Marjory Manners, is also in the party as is another couple, Cutie and Thick, and a Mrs. Trevet. Not wanting to put up with the uninvited guests, Billy asks Leatherneck to introduce him as one of the ranch hands and then tells La Rue that Billy has been killed by a gang of bandits, led by Wild Bill Jones, and advises the group to leave as they may get their throats cut. However, La Rue decides that, as he is the deceased's nearest available relative, he will take charge of the ranch. Later, when La Rue and Marjory go riding, Marjory's horse bolts. Billy immediately rides after her and lifts her from her horse to his, remarking that she is beautiful, but dumb. In the evening, Billy sees La Rue attempting to ply Marjory with liquor and shoots at the bottle, destroying it. La Rue then fires Billy, but Billy lingers nearby to see what might develop and capitalize on Marjory's growing interest in him. After La Rue also fires Leatherneck and the ranch's cook, Billy receives word that Wild Bill Jones and his gang have rustled half of the ranch's cattle. Billy then decides to tell the Easterners that he is really Wild Bill Jones and takes over the ranch, ordering them to perform very menial tasks: La Rue mops the porch, while Marjory mends Leatherneck's socks. When La Rue and Marjory make a midnight escape on horseback, they are spotted by Billy, who follows them. On the trail, the couple encounters the real Wild Bill Jones and his gang, and unaware of his identity, ask for his help. After La Rue tells Jones that he is a millionaire and can pay for his help, Jones reveals who he is and holds them for ransom. The next morning, after following them to Jones' hideout, Billy enables La Rue and Marjory to escape and sends them back to the ranch while he holds off Jones and his men. At the ranch, after hours pass with no sign of Billy, Marjory, who has become disillusioned by La Rue's behavior and more interested in Billy, is very worried. Eventually, Billy arrives with Jones as his prisoner, ready to be handed over to the sheriff. Billy then orders La Rue and the other Easterners into the house so that he can be alone with Marjory and they embrace.
